Weekend links

Leipzig has been cancelled (the games convention, not the city), wonder if Cologne will take its place. I read it here first.

Pester Flimgoblin, starting his blogging career at War of Alts. He found us at Games Day!

Pwnsan has put up a ton of unlock guides, for how to get those nifty pocket items. Nice work… I’ll have to decide what I want and go for it.

Word of Shadow talks about the idea of a joint account. It’s not 100% new to the table, but I think it’s an awesome idea and that companies really need to work on some of their subscription models. Why not have joint accounts? Then my husband might be tempted to play MMOs again for lesser expense.

Wide Eyed Newb makes an important point. If you enjoy a blog post, comment on it. It really perks us up if we get comments, and that goes for all bloggers!

Over at Player vs Developer, you can join in a discussion about whether the free content coming to WAR is really an expansion. I agree that it really isn’t, it’s just extra content, a la many other MMOs. Common Sense Gamer also quite sensibly points out that the two MDPS classes were taken out of the game to get it released in time, adding them back doesn’t really count as adding new conent, but in restoring it. I’d like to add LotRO to the games discussed as a game that has had frequent content added but in knowing what an expansion really is with Mines of Moria! That’s not to say I’m not looking forward to the Land of the Dead and Slayers though.

The sky is falling! No, Mark Jacobs announces official forums. And there’s a CS grab bag, and there’s some news on 1.1.1

/random has alerted me to the coolest Valentine’s cards, via geekadelphia and Hawty McBloggy.

Oh, and go watch the Bloodbowl trailers!

Newsletter is out and about

Got mine last night, but quite late, when I was already considering bed. And the links didn’t ‘exactly’ work. They still don’t, but I went over to the Warhammer US site and pulled up the newsletter page. [Edit: Euro newsletter can be found here, with link to Book of Grudges and mentioning our Dublin get-together!]

It’s as expected, and follows on from the announcement with some more info on all topics.

  • Keep an eye on the  Call to Arms expansion pages for info on the schedule and events, the new classes and the Land of the Dead.
  • There’s a brief overview of both Slayers and Choppas with some artwork.
  • Paul and Josh introduce the new classes in their latest podcast. Hrrm, didn’t I copyright ‘they’re short, they’re round, they bounce along the ground’? Damn, I was pretty close!!
  • More details on the Bitter Rivals event, including the Twisting Tower battleground – but really, we get to /swear at one another. Awesome!
  • Overview of the Valentine’s event – The Night of Murder. Not as interested in this one, so am sticking to the link.
  • Visit WAR at NY Comic Con – if you’re in the US and can make it, it’ll be an awesome event now with ADDED WAR. I love the Big Apple trophy. Seriously. I know it won’t work in Europe, but still… there’s also a sidebar link to upcoming events, including various Games Days.
  • Shorter items about the launch in Russia and the making of the WAR trailer we all loved
  • Scenarios 101 on Temple of Isha and Tor Anroc
  • Concept art of Choppa and Slayer weapons
  • Excerpts from the soundtrack
  • Paul’s videophone blog and his presentation from Korea
  • New gear available at the Mythic store (including the books that came in the collector’s edition!)
  • Fan art, featuring the Choppa v Slayer webcomic from Tome of Knowledge creator (hurrah)
  • The Grab Bag, Meet the Developer, Wallpapers
  • and some other stuff!

Aaaand, here’s the official press release

Catch it while it’s hot.

New classes! New battleground! Events! New ‘Darkness Falls’! And forums!

Hurrah for GOA and not having to wait up until midnight!

Unfortunately, can’t give any more details just yet because although we know Eurogamer.net as a reliable source, there’s nothing on the GOA site. Was this a press release that slipped the net a bit early perhaps?

But fair play to Mythic, I’m really excited again for the first time in awhile. Definitely want to know more and read the full press release when it’s available, but I’m looking forwards to poking around the new fun things with my old characters and maybe a new alt or two also.

And a Tomb Kings dungeon? That means skeletons and where there are skeletons there could be …. ZOMBIES!!!! *massive excitement*

Incidentally, spare a thought for those brave, foolhardy souls who decide to start a new healer or ranged dps alt when the Choppas/ Slayers are released, ravening for their blood.

Kotaku are reporting Call to Arms as the first live expansion. It’s not a paid expansion but a series of events and new content feeding into the game between February and June this year. Loads more info about all the new stuff at the link above.

Guessing at the announcement

There’s a dev chat scheduled on Tentonhammer later today at 7pm EST, at which it’s very likely that the developers will be chatting to all comers about today’s announcements.

7pm EST is midnight round where we live, so on the off-chance that we don’t hear anything before then, here’s some of our guesses at what Mythic may plan to announce.

  1. Slayers, Choppas, and a new event to introduce them. Despite Girl IRLs (can we stop pretending that no girls play these games yet?) best efforts, I remain unconvinced about female slayers 🙂
  2. A St Valentine’s Day massacre-style holiday.
  3. Official bulletin boards
  4. Revamps for some of the missing cities (if anyone was around for beta you may remember that the original idea was to have a full city for each race, rather than fortresses).
  5. New hats for High Elves!
  6. Pets. First ones available will be a groupie for dark elves and a walking beer keg for dwarves.
  7. New tradeskill: Topiary
  8. Mail revamp to allow multiple mails (Earendur)
  9. Paul and Josh returning to the mothership (Melmoth)
  10. Stunty Stew for dinner! Nom nom … (Warboss)
  11. Horse trousers and Naval Combat (Zoso, and I want some of what he’s been smoking)

Feel free to add your suggestions, we’ll add them to the end of the list.

Karak Izor – Come on Down!!

Today’s the day Karak-Izor players get to start the transfer process and pick their new server out of a few choices (Karak Eight Peaks, Karak-Hirn, Karak-Norn, Karak-Azgal). For information about the transfer process, take a look here.

We wish all the players find happy homes on more populated servers and get to kick butt alongside their new realm mates. And for the receiving servers – be nice to your new additions!

Kill time, slaughter blog posts!

Ok, so I’m up early and we have a wait till this big announcement. Go read some new blogs, the blogroll on the side here is fairly extensive and I still have more to add. So, I’ll let you read through some with me, as I read my feed reader this morning, these are the things that strike me:

  • Skurmish has gone and got a WAR a screenshot on Massively, in the One Shots segment. Congrats!
  • Oh no! Schlotzy’s is closing (but I understand why), I enjoyed it while it lasted!
  • Reroller is right, the Sigmar tattoo is… odd. That’s not to say I haven’t made a toon with it, and then deleted her!
  • I know I’ve been out of the loop for a while, but really.. people dropping out of scenarios again. Mythic – this is tragic. And lame, and cowardly, and playing the numbers game – which all MMOs get to eventually with some players.
  • Addicted to oRvR? You should be (perhaps). I’ll be passing the news of this oRvR tracker add-on to my guild, for sure.
  • Keen will never shave his head and dye the mohawk orange, Syp. You know that! I’ve had a mohawk, and considered it. But then I didn’t get a Valentine’s so my hair is staying where it is! (If anyone wants to see me with a mohawk, I might post it, sometime!)
  • Baby giraffes are cute. Maybe this is the one they’re discussing in Prancing Pony (oops, wrong game!)
  • Regis is playing scrabble for me. Good, cos I’m lazy and it’s early in the morning. I think WAR event hints works nicely, for the record. Go write Regis a nice Valentine’s poem for your arch-nemesis. Um.. I’ll think up one, honest.

That’s it for today, I might keep this format, of my initial thoughts as I go through my reader… tell me what you think

Pretty diagrams!

GOA have presented us with a fun run-down of team play, in what we can safely assume is the start of a series of useful guides to the game.

The guide covers grouping in open RvR, including handy hints and tips on leading groups and a variety of tactics and skills. I definitely enjoyed it, and look forward to the rest of the series.

Guild leader interview: no. 1

In the first of what we hope will become a series of interviews with European guilds across a number of servers, we start with XXI Grams, who play on Karak Eight Peaks. I’d like to thank Grindhouse, their guild leader a lot for answering my questions, I think they’re bound to give some interesting insights into what others are doing in the game. So please get in touch (in comments or via email or twitter) if you would like to answer a similar set of questions!

Tell us a little about your guild, why that name, when they formed and what server they play on?

We are a guild of a small core of players, our goal at creation was to have 2 prefixed groups running on a daily basis to have some nice 6v6 fights and 6vx and 12vzerg. We chose the name 21 Grams (XXI Grams couse numbers are not allowed in WAR) becouse it has a deeper meaning than just numbers, you know as they say: Quote from the movie: ” How many lives do we live? How many times do we die? They say we all lose 21 grams… at the exact moment of our death. Everyone. And how much fits into 21 grams? How much is lost? How much is gained? Twenty-one grams. The weight of a stack of five nickels. The weight of a hummingbird. A chocolate bar. How much did 21 grams weigh?” people say and it’s confirmed by science that you actually do lose 21 grams when you you die, so it kinda grew into a superstition about you losing your soul.

We formed about 6 months prior to launch of WAR, where we also played in the closed and open beta. We chose to play on Karak Eight Peaks, becouse alot of old friends from DAoC also went to the same server, we kinda tried to agree on one server prior to launch to know where to go, to create our community of old DAoC’ers.

How many members do you have?

At this point we are running in 2 prefixed groups, 12 people, but we do have 1-2 backups when someone is in slack mode.

What’s been the best thing you’ve done in Warhammer Online? As a guild, and personally?

The best thing we’ve done in Warhammer.. I think that so far has been putting up a challenge vs order as a small scale guild, killing twice our numbers and organized and promoted some 6v6 fights in locked zones for some fun, because the mindless zerg is pretty much boring and not interesting without Crowd Control.  Personally I think, the best thing I’ve done is to create the guild we are now. Having a core of great people and members and friends in the guild from all different nationalities, we have loads of fun, we laugh a lot together and we got a new Motto: Just Click It – Jokes aside, yes the best thing I’ve done is to make all those people come together and become friends and strive for more than just playing a game.

How do you approach guild leadership?

Guild leadership is not a big issue with us, because every member of the guild is a mature player with whom we all can get along with. Everyone has something to say and contribute to various ideas and whatnot. Recruitment, zerging, 6v6 groups, lost vale and so forth. In the end I do take the big descisions and sign the deal. But pretty much every guildmember has to agree, we’re like a board who has to reach a unanimous descision.

What’s great about the server you play on?

The great and fun thing about our server is, that there are alot of old DAoC guilds who support small scale combat and RvR, and more are coming as they see we do it more and more often. So we do hope that in the end, the zerg will stop and the 6v6 will start!

How did you go about picking a faction?

This is a funny story, becouse initially we were supposed to play Order. But when we were about to pick server, we were looking at which guilds were going on which faction, and we wanted to be on the underpopulated/underskilled side, to be challenged by other players and guilds. So when we noticed and saw that the majority of old familiar DAoC faces went to Order, we decided Destruction.

What’s the biggest problem you have with WAR currently?

Zerg – I cant stress this enough Zerg is bad, zerg doesnt require any skill, only by the zerg leader, Souzy <3, so all you do is, you have 1 person leading 4 warbands, with half of them going afk, and doing a Tab 44444 to hit the door. We are trying to promote 6v6 combat as much as possible, not only is it fun, but in the same time as a zerg can get a full zone capped, you can get twice the renown points dong 6v6. it’s alot more challenging, requires more coordination, teamplay and skill and makes the game so much more interesting and fun. Ohh and ofc LAG at forts.. and zone crashed and the fact that they totally killed and nerfed Chosens 😦

What do you tell people who don’t play about the game?

Not that much to be honest, but if I see a guy/girl playing a diff game I’d definately try to get him/her to play WAR. Maybe tell the person how the game works and stuff, but most people I know who doesn’t play this game, doesn’t play any other game.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about the guild, the server, or the game?

I love the game and I love the server we are playing on. Could use some twitches and more 6v6 promotion and balance. Other than that, all I can say is, promote 6v6 guys, make it happen, take up a challenge, fight for your honour and your guildname and colours. Make people know, that you pwn! And remember – Just Click It!

XXI Grams have just released an RvR video that’s well worth watching, so hop on over and check it out!

and a couple of things to read

Schlotzky’s on what he’d like to see in the 29/1 announcement (of course, Americans say 1/29 ;p)

The lovely Regis on decrypting the Valentine’s poems. Got to thank him, because I’m rushing for work and have barely had the time to read them. You can’t go far wrong by following his blog, people!
