A Joke Post

To all of those surprised the World First(!!!!) capture of Karl Franz hasn’t made Mythic’s homepage or the Herald, I have simply one thing to say:

Mythic hate Europe!

(and yes, I did feel the need to openly say this was comedic in intent, even if it’s a phrase I’ve repeated many many times in seriousness)

NB: You can read GOA’s write-up on the event here, along with some screenshots.

Death (well Capture) of the Emperor

Congrats to the Third Realm Alliance for taking down Karl Franz on Karak Eight Peaks.

For those interested, they’ve posted a pic of the loot here, but more importantly, there’s also a video up:.

And, finally – a picture of the poor old boy captured in the Inevitable City.

Even though I’m an Order gal through and through, am mightily impressed at this awesome European feat, and hope for many more!

Order pushes on to the Inevitable City on US Volkmar

I think I’m mostly impressed that they had the patience to farm the ward gear to kill the fortress lords. Here’s a couple of threads about it, on WHA and the Vault. I’m assuming they’re working the PQs to control the city at the moment, hopefully we’ll find out more during the day.

For Sigmar!

We want to learn!

There’s been a ton of talk about open RvR in Tier 4 of late. Why? Because all us pesky early-adopters are hitting Tier 4 and we write and gripe about the things we do. And I do take the ‘wait-and-see’ approach, especially as there are more and more tentative forays into Tier 4 RvR all the time on our server, and I think it’ll be the same everywhere, though not always at the same timescale. Mythic knows there’s a problem, they’ll do their best to fix it. And people signing up generally want to play an RvR game, not a game of Serpent’s-Passage-till-your-eyes-bleed.

I do have one complaint about Tier 4 and the campaign there though, and I personally believe it’s a valid one. Why didn’t they train us in how it all works at the lower tiers? I mean, we got to understand capture the flag, the various ways and means to capture battlefield objectives and increasingly larger keeps. We got to learn about siege weaponry (love!) and postern doors, and yet, the moment you get into Tier 4 you get a whole new set of things to get your head around if you don’t go and read up everything there is to read across the web on it.

Zones being locked. It’s a bit of a mindfuck, when you’ve not really seen it before. And then the campaign moving elsewhere.. and yet you can still drift around the open RvR areas (I use drift because I have a gyro!), and not see anyone. Yes, it’s locked, but it feels strange, almost eerie. And you still get nice xp for scouting the objectives! And then instinctively knowing all the stages you need to go through to capture a zone or to head for the Inevitable City. I’m not stupid, but it is quite tricky to go from ‘wander anywhere and take whatever keep feels nice’ to being directed for the good of the final campaign. We’ll get there, but I wonder if there was any way to do it differently. And I wonder if that’s some of the reason the spontaneous open RvR isn’t as plentiful in Tier 4 as everyone seems to be reporting it is in Tier 3.

Anyway, just another quick thought from my weekend away from the game.

The Curse of Karak Eight Peaks

I always think it’s interesting how different servers can end up feeling so diverse. We all started from the same point, but from reading forums you could get the impression that some are utopian oases of plenty, where players (distributed evenly between both sides) rejoice in plentiful PQs, fair play, incredible realm coordination, live Muse concerts*, and other forms of crazy debauchery.

Then there is Karak Eight Peaks.

You may remember this server name because it was the EU server on which we reported the first capital city under siege. This turned out to have exposed a barrel load of exploits by which Destruction players had been able to sneak into fortresses through the postern doors, and so on. Mythic addressed these fairly quickly, but the story on K8P didn’t end there.

Apparently Altdorf has been sieged several times since then. There have been issues with the siege resetting, issues with defenders being allowed in (which explains the lack of defenders), issues with Destruction being able to lock down Tier 4 zones but Order not. Because of the resetting issues, Destruction players have been able to farm Altdorf for gear — well, as far as they are able. In a thread on WHA, one player comments:

From my perspective, the only reason I take part in destro RvR warbands to capture and sack Altdorf is for the epic gear. As you probably know, you can get some of the best gear in the game via purchase with blue defender gems, and the easiest way to get these atm is through quests in Altdorf.

Pandemic@FH lists all the issues he has seen on K8P. Some of these issues have already been hotfixed on US servers (the marauder fix for example) but not yet on EU. Destruction players also noted issues with Order being able to run unflagged into the fortresses to defend (usually on a Core server, you automatically get flagged 10s after entering an RvR lake – I haven’t seen the fortresses myself but if they are close enough to a warcamp that you could get to the postern door within 10s this is a huge issue). And as if that wasn’t enough, the server has also had a bug with people being able to join groups.

I don’t know if these issues affect all servers, but GOA have taken a fairly extreme measure in resetting the tier 4 campaign completely on K8P.

Yesterday as many of you may have noticed, we reset the campaign on the Karak Eight peaks server. This is not something we did lightly but it was the only way to resolve the problems of stuck zones that have been widely reported by players there. As a result the tier four zones and keeps have been reset to their default ownership and it is once again possible to fight over and capture zones.

There’s a thread from The Vault reporting similar issues on Volkmar (US), again affecting Order.

Do you play on K8P and how has this affected you? Anyone on any other servers which have had city sieges seen any of these issues? Will the fixes announced in the latest patch help?

* They were great live when I saw them, although it was a few years ago.

Altdorf falls on Averheim (US)

Apparently there was alarm clock style organisation involved. Congrats to Destruction on that server, they say controlling Altdorf took a 5 hour effort. Not sure if the new higher level NPC fixes are in yet though.

Here’s a thread about it.

The big question for us is when someone will take The Inevitable City. Can’t make any predictions, but Order is looking pretty strong on our server so who knows?

NB. I don’t personally consider 7am Sunday to be an alarm clock raid because I’d normally be up and online at that time. I think it’s way more civilised than 2am.

Mythic announces xp tweaks for T3 & 4 and in open RvR

Props to Mythic who have been incredibly responsive to player feedback since launch. They have two more announcements on the Herald today which may help somewhat with the Tier 3 slowdown.

Experience Enhancements (Phase 1). The experience awarded for questing in chapters 10-22 is being tweaked upwards and extra repeatable PvE quests have been added to tier 3 (chapters 10-14). Also, the experience given for killing a player in open world RvR gets tweaked upwards by 50% — that’s definitely an incentive to get out there and fight.

There are also hints of further announcements next week about open world RvR. We’re expecting some kind of big announcement about future plans for next week also, to encourage people to subscribe when their free month is up.

High Level Encounter Tweaks. This all relates to Tier 4 (which most of us haven’t seen yet), the fortress lords and contested city guards have become tougher and set pieces available from RvR in that tier have been tweaked upwards to match. We’ll be on the lookout for the first successful city siege when these new changes have been patched in.
